Pronounced Guh no m
GNOME is an acronym for GNU Network Object Model Environment. Which is kind of a ten dollar way to say network desktop. There are two desktops currently battling for your computer screen. GNOME and KDE. There are a few fundamental differences between the two. However from a user's point of view, the differences are more subtle and much more a matter of preference.
I personally believe in, and prefer the GNOME project. I've been a part of it since it's beginning. I have found the members of the project very helpful, and fun to talk with. I've written the (to date) only GUI front end to the TinyFugue mud client, named Crescendo
I maintained the GNOME project website for around a year while an (in)formal committee was established to take over.
Realistically the GNOME project now provides a viable alternative to using Windows in today's world. The panel gives users an easy way to access their most common used programs, along with helpful, intuitive "applets" that can provide important system information, and help with ease-of-use issues in day to day work.
